Book our exciting Big Fish Mondays - Taking place at Billingsgate Market !

The visit incorporates four activities, all designed to encourage children to find out more about fish and shellfish.

Our first Big Fish Monday session. Here are just a few pictures and comments on how the day went:

Feedback from the children:

"We got the chance to cook ; it was so much fun and that gave me the inspiration to cook for my family"

"I really like learning about sustainability and how it affects the population of fish"

"My favourite part was when the fish was cut open and we could look at its body parts, especially the squid ,as I never knew that its skeleton looked so weird"

"At first I wasn’t keen about going to the market, but afterwards, I loved Billingsgate Fish market because of the friendly staff and how much fish there was. The activities we did were amazing. If I could , I would go there again"

"I thought it would have been boring. My favourite activity was seeing the fish bones and the insides. I would recommend children going to Billingsgate- it will be a fun opportunity to learn about fish and it will have benefits for the future"

"After I went on the trip, I have now started eating fish. It is amazing and lots of fun to learn about different types of fish"

We have four activities scheduled:

Activity 1: MAKING A FISH DISPLAY – identifying the fish species – handling/touching
Activity 2: A FILLETING SESSION – inside the fish – gills, heart, eyes – handling/touching
Activity 3: COOKING AND TASTING – making a simple recipe, tasting
Activity 4: DVD- CATCHING FISH & FISHING GAME- focus on sustainability

Each activity will last 25 minutes with 5-minute changeovers – the start time is 10am with all activities completed by 12.15 ready for the children to have a break and eat their packed lunches.  After a quick round up the visit will finish at 1pm.  All staff involved in the visit are DBS checked – a full risk assessment is available

Suitable for Key Stage 2   the visits are planned for 60 children to take part.  As a charity our schools programme is one of our key activities but we ask for schools to contribute to the cost of the visit - £2 per child - payable once a date is confirmed.

Publicity: Schools are encouraged to publicise the visit to the whole school community through a newsletter or the school web site.  If local newspaper coverage can be achieved it is a great opportunity to get the wider community thinking Fish!  We may also want to take photos for industry publicity, so we ask for schools to obtain permission from parents for pictures to be used on web sites and social media.  We appreciate for some children this may not be appropriate and we are always careful to exclude any children from photographs if we do not have permission.

Availability is limited but we have the following dates scheduled for the summer term:
Monday 23rd April; Monday 11th June; Monday 18th June; Monday 9th July; Monday 16th July
